I have sketched extensively for many years in the Borders, Highlands and many of the islands off the West coast of Scotland as well as the moorland of the North of England near where I live.
I find remote, sometimes isolated or desolate buildings in a landscape very powerful and evocative. These lonely, almost time frozen buildings in the landscape are something that has fascinated me for many years, the absence of human activity in my paintings is a perfect contrast to the world that we live in.

I paint an emotional response to a scene rather than a literal interpretation of what I see.

My paintings sit somewhere between objective and abstract; the mountain ranges and cottages are drawn with precision so that the paintings have a sense of place, but after that my emotional response to the scene takes over. The foregrounds I interpret from my sketchbooks which record my observations and personal experiences of the landscape textures and colours.

My first forays in painting were in art classes in school, bound by painterly rules, now there are no rules! I use both conventional and non-conventional tools and equipment to manipulate the paint across the surface of my paintings in order to achieve the textures that convey my thoughts of the scenes.
